Founded in the 1800s along the railroad, Apex earned its name from its location at the highest point along a section of the rail line between Richmond and Jacksonville. The railroad helped shape the town's early growth, while tobacco farming, local businesses, and hardworking families built the community. Historic Salem Street, with its familiar brick storefronts and old railroad depot, remains a reminder of the town's rich past.
